One Year Down, A Lifetime to Go: Things I Learned My First Year of Blogging

My goodness y’all!  I cannot believe it’s already been a whole year since The Goddess Column was born! It’s actually a few days past our first birthday (November 12th), but I’ve been so busy I hadn’t had the time to share about it! So I figured, what better way to celebrate our first birthday than to share what I’ve learned along the journey so far. Let’s get into it!

write

Being a writer is like having homework every night for the rest of your life.

Coffee.

The desire to write will never go away.

You’ll put way more money into your website than you’ll even come close to making the first year.

Support can be shown in a variety of ways.

A “retweet”, repost, or Facebook share is an easy way to show your support.

Support comes from a variety of people.

The “virtual you” can reach millions of individuals–don’t make light of it.

Touch lives in as many words and ways that you can.

Share as many of your truths as you can.

The anxiety of missing a deadline or not writing a piece you told yourself you should write will never really go away.

Write about things you care about.

The worst mistake you can make is writing about what you “think” people are looking for.

Ignore people who ask you if writing is the only thing you want to do with your life.

Buy nice journals.

Support doesn’t always come from the people you expect it to come from.

Nothing cures writer’s block like just getting up from your computer.

Coffee.

Brainstorming is a must.

Audience interaction is not as easily obtainable as you might think.

Always remember it took Necole Bitchie years to become Necole Bitchie.

Stay true to your vision.

Google analytics–get that shxt.

You can write about something other than what Beyoncé wore today or the latest celebrity gossip and still get views.

The first time you publish a sexually explicit piece, you’ll wonder what your mother would think if she read it. Seriously.

Don’t write to get page views, write with purpose.

Managing your content and website are a full-time job.

Write in a way that people can hear you. Literally. People should ‘hear your voice’ in writing.

You will write things out of emotion and realize a bit later that you absolutely did NOT mean to share those thoughts with the world.

The previous will make you laugh at yourself. It’s okay, it’s healthy.

Although social media is a great way to promote your website, don’t rely on only that.

Talk about your website–A LOT.

Connect with other writers–all kinds.

Ask more experienced writers for advice, mentorship, promotion… anything you find helpful.

Pay attention to detail.

Write in different atmospheres.

Find a favorite coffee shop and binge write there once a week (or as often as you please).

Sometimes writing a piece takes thirty minutes; other times you’ll find yourself lost in your laptop at a coffee shop for hours.

Ask people what they think you should write about.

Understand that not everybody will like your writing or your writing style. Forget about ‘em.

Share your writing with as many people as you can.

Coffee.

Don’t be afraid to get lost in your ideas.

The hours between midnight and 4am will be a very familiar place to you.

Always work to improve your site.

Always request feedback.

Never stop researching.

You won’t like everything you write.

Sometimes you’ll write a piece you feel should be published in every magazine out there.

Never stop writing.

Always set goals.

Don’t be discouraged if others find they cannot commit to your dream the way you can.

Always give people who want to grow with you the opportunity to do so.

SEO is necessary, but will always be annoying (at least to me).

You’ll inspire a lot more people than you thought imaginable.

It’ll always make your heart smile when someone randomly brings up an article you wrote.

Be proud of your work–NO MATTER WHAT.

Read your own work as you wish other people to do.

C O F F E E .

I’m sure the list could go on forever, but I think I covered a good bit of it for the most part! This first year with you all has been the most fulfilling and happiest year of my life to date. Each and every one of you means so much to me. The Goddess Column would be absolutely nothing without you. Thank you so much for your continued love and support.

As long as you keep reading, I’ll keep writing.

Peace, love, and light, dear reader.

-Isis.
